Almighty God’s Word Led Me Out of the Bondage of Sin (I)

One day, after the meeting, I said to my church leader, “Brother Yan, there is a question that has puzzled me for a long time. I’d like to ask you.” Brother Yan said, “Thank the Lord! What’s your question? Tell me.” I asked, “We’ve been living in the state of sinning each day and confessing each night, and are bound by sin without releasing. How can we attain sanctity?” Brother Yan answered confidently, “Although we still sin, the Lord Jesus has forgiven all our sins. The sin offering is forever effective. Since we believe in the Lord Jesus, we are already called righteous. It is said in the Bible, ‘By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.’ (Heb 10:10) So there is no need to trouble yourself. We can break free from the bondage of sin and become holy only if we confess and repent our sins before the Lord. Now, so long as we run and spend for the Lord and abound in the work of the Lord, our actions can be considered as righteousness and will certainly be approved by the Lord!” I replied in bewilderment, “I don’t think belief in God is so simple. Could only believing in the Lord Jesus represent purification? The Bible says, ‘… you shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.’ (Lev 11:45) ‘… holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:’ (Heb 12:14) And the Lord Jesus also said, ‘Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.’ (Jhn 17:17) So if we want to be purified, we should search for the way of the truth.” Brother Yan said, “The Lord treats whoever believes in Him with mercy and loveliness. The Bibles says, ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ (Jhn 3:16) God loves man. He considers every one of us as the apple of His eye, and even gave His only begotten son to us. As long as we trust the Lord Jesus sincerely, we are justified by faith, and hence purified… All right, I’ve got something else to do. So much for today!” With that, he turned around and left.

I came back to my hairdressing shop, and sat in the sofa, dispirited and weak, thinking about Brother Yan’s fellowship: He didn’t show me the way of practice at all. And then I recalled my belief in the Lord those years. Although I actively attended the meeting every time, I can’t act according to the Lord’s teachings in many things: In the church, although there seemed to be few disputes between other brothers and sisters and me outwardly, I would be prejudiced against others when I saw something not to my liking; At home, I was unable to practice forbearance and patience when I can’t stand some behaviors of my husband. Such belief as mine couldn’t be approved by the Lord! I turned my head toward the Bible lying silently on the desk, tears flowing freely down my face. I cried out in my heart: O Lord! Where are You? …

Then, a regular customer, Sister Zhou, came in smilingly. I turned back hurriedly, swept away my tears, and then stood up slowly. Sister Zhou asked with concern, “Sister Li, what’s wrong with you? You don’t look well.” “It’s nothing.” I said feebly with a forced smile, and then began to wash and trim her hair. She took a look at the Bible on the desk and asked me, “Sister, how is your spiritual state going recently?” Hearing that, I couldn’t hold back my sadness, and tears flowed down again. I said sadly, “I can’t feel the presence of the Lord. I feel darkened in my spirit, often live in sin and is powerless to break free from it. I really don’t know how to walk the path that lies ahead.” Sister Zhou comforted me, “Sister Li, don’t be so sad. The Lord will guide us. My past state was the same as yours. Later, I read a book, and the words of it resolved my agony and confusion. My faith increased, and I also knew how to walk the path ahead.” On hearing that, I took a look at Sister Zhou, finding she indeed looked far better than before. After the haircut, Sister Zhou stood up, took out a book from her bag and passed it to me with her hands. She said, “Sister, you should read this book carefully, pray more to God and ask for His guidance, and then your confusion will surely be solved.” I thought to myself, “I have read a lot of spiritual books, yet none of them ends my agony. There can’t be such a good book!” Therefore, I said to Sister Zhou, “You’d better keep it yourself. There are a great many books in my mother’s home.” Sister Zhou said earnestly, “This book is different from other books. You might as well keep it.” Seeing her sincere eyes, I felt it was rude to reject her, so I took the book from her hands.

At dusk, I closed my shop and went to my mother’s home. Seeing my sad face, my mother asked concernedly, “How was the meeting today?” I sighed and said, “It was the same as usual.” My elder sister said, “Anyway, let’s read the Bible.” At that moment, I thought of the book Sister Zhou gave me, and said, “Sister Zhou gave me a book in my shop just now. She said that this book could solve my spiritual confusion. How about reading it together?” “All right. Please read it for us.” answered my mother. I turned to the first page and read, “Though many people believe in God, few understand what faith in God means, and what they must do to be after God’s heart. This is because, though people are familiar with the word ‘God’ and phrases such as ‘the work of God,’ they do not know God, much less do they know His work. No wonder, then, that all those who do not know God are possessed of a muddled belief. People do not take belief in God seriously because believing in God is too unfamiliar, too strange for them. In this way, they are far from the demands of God. In other words, if people do not know God, do not know His work, then they are not fit for God’s use, much less can they fulfill the desire of God. ‘Belief in God’ means believing that there is a God; this is the simplest concept of ‘faith in God.’ What’s more, believing that there is a God is not the same as truly believing in God; rather, it is a kind of simple faith with strong religious overtones.” (from The Word Appears in the Flesh) I was shocked at these words and said with a frown, “Is it a muddled belief to believe in God without knowing God? We always think that as long as we read Scripture more, gather together more, and are willing to suffer, then it means we truly believe in God. But according to this book, belief without knowing God is only a religious faith? Am I not truly believing in the Lord?”

My mother asked in reply, “I read Scripture, attend meetings, and offer money; isn’t it true faith in God? Then, what is true faith in God?” My sister said, “Let’s read the words below.” I lowered my head and continued to read, “True ‘faith in God’ means experiencing the words and work of God based on a belief that God holds sovereignty over all things. So you shall be freed of your corrupt disposition, shall fulfill the desire of God, and shall come to know God. Only through such a journey can you be said to believe in God.” (from The Word Appears in the Flesh) When I read that, my sister said amazedly, “These words are so wonderful! Merely these few words explain ‘faith in God’ so clearly. So we are not truly believing in God if we simply gather together and pray. True faith in God refers to being freed of corrupt disposition, knowing God and satisfying God.” I said, “To attain true faith we must get rid of our corrupt disposition. However, I still can’t practice in accordance with the teachings of the Lord now, and I’m always bound by sin, not rid of my corrupt disposition at all. Seems I’m not truly believing in God.” My sister said with emotion, “Yeah, me neither. I’ve never taken belief in God seriously, nor have I thought what God’s will is. After reading that passage of words, I realize that I’ve been believing in the Lord in a muddled way these years. Ay, I’m really whiling away my days. These words are so practical, and they have the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit!” My mother said, “Who can control the sins in the heart? The Lord is compassionate and gracious. As long as we truly trust the Lord Jesus, we are justified by faith, and hence purified.” I shook my head and said, “The Bible says, ‘… you shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.’ (Lev 11:45) ‘… holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.’ (Heb 12:14) The Lord is holy, so we are not qualified to see the Lord for we are still sinful. Ay, how can we cast off sins and serve to the Lord’s will?” My sister said, “Somehow I feel these words are a bit similar to the Lord Jesus’ words. Could it be the Lord’s words?” At that moment, the three of us were all immersed in thought, and spoke no more. I put down the book gently, stood up with a sense of loss, and went back to my room. Lying on the bed, I tossed and turned and couldn’t fall asleep. I asked myself over and over, “What should I do to get rid of sins and be approved by the Lord?”

The next day, when the dawn was just breaking, I asked my sister the question last night, “How can we get rid of sins?” She replied bewilderedly, “I didn’t sleep well for the whole night and was pondering this question as well, yet finding no answer.” I said while thinking, “I think this book differs from all other spiritual books. How about reading more of it? Maybe it can show us a way to practice.” My sister answered, “All right!” Then we began to read it at the desk, “… Man was … forgiven his sins, but the work for just how the corrupt satanic dispositions within man could be cast away was not done in him. Man was only saved and forgiven his sins for his faith, but the sinful nature of man was not taken away and still remained within him. The sins of man were forgiven through God incarnate, but it does not mean that man has no sin within him. The sins of man could be forgiven through the sin offering, but man has been unable to resolve the issue of just how he can no longer sin and how his sinful nature can be cast away completely and be transformed.” (from The Word Appears in the Flesh) When I read that, my heart was suddenly enlightened, and I said gladly, “So it is that God didn’t do the work of casting away man’s corrupt dispositions, and man has been unable to resolve his sins. Indeed! If God didn’t work, we couldn’t possibly resolve our sins no matter how hard we try.” My sister nodded in agreement. And then we continued reading, “The sins of man were forgiven because of the work of God’s crucifixion, but man continued to live in the old, corrupt satanic disposition. As such, man must be completely saved from the corrupt satanic disposition so that the sinful nature of man is completely cast away and never again develops, thus allowing the disposition of man to be changed. This requires man to understand the path of growth in life, the way of life, and the way to change his disposition. It also needs man to act in accordance with this path so that the disposition of man can gradually be changed and he can live under the shining of the light, and that he can do all things in accord with the will of God, cast away the corrupt satanic disposition, and break free from Satan’s influence of darkness, thereby emerging fully from sin. Only then will man receive complete salvation.” (from The Word Appears in the Flesh) I said excitedly, “The words ‘the path of growth in life,’ ‘the way to change his disposition,’ ‘emerging fully from sin,’ and ‘complete salvation’ mentioned here are all the issues that we are most concerned about. We have the hope to break free from the bondage of sin and be purified!” My sister also said delightedly, “These words are so great! No spiritual person is able to speak such words. These words could well be God’s words!” The more we read, the more elated we were. Then we read, “When Jesus came into the world of man, He brought the Age of Grace and ended the Age of Law. During the last days, God once more became flesh, and when He became flesh this time, the Age of Grace ended and the Age of Kingdom began. All those who accept the second incarnation of God will be led into the Age of Kingdom, and be able to personally accept the guidance of God.” (from The Word Appears in the Flesh) I was rapturous, and my hands, holding the book, were trembling slightly. With tears brimming in my eyes, I said, “The Lord has come back! The Lord has already come back! He has brought a new age and done a new work!” My sister also said excitedly, “Yeah, only God can speak such words, and only God can bring man into the new age.” I said, “Well, I’ll visit Sister Zhou and ask her more.” “Great!” replied my sister.
