Reflections on the Story of Genghis Khan

Liu Miao

Once when helping my child with his homework, I saw a story of Genghis Khan and His Eagle in his Chinese textbook (Note: Genghis Khan, born in Mongolia, was the founder of the Yuan dynasty of China. He was the Great Khan and the founder of the Mongol Empire. He was a politician, and a military commander.), which basically said: One day, Genghis Khan went hunting with his beloved eagle. After a long journey, he was overcome with thirst. Then he came to a ravine and saw water dripping from the rock. Immediately he took out a cup to catch the drips. And it took him a good while to fill the cup to within a third of full. Just when he was about to drink the water, something suddenly soared straight for him and upset his cup. Frustrated, he looked up and found it was his eagle. He had no choice but to collect the water again. However, every time when he nearly filled the cup with water, the eagle knocked it over. In a rage, he killed the eagle with his knife. Afterward, he found there was a dead viper in the upper reaches of the stream. Not until then did he realize that the reason his eagle upset his cup over and over again was to save his life, but he killed it. After that, Genghis Khan set a rule for himself: Never jump to conclusions whatever he encounters in the future. And this rule played an important role in achieving his feats in the future.

Genghis Khan

This story deeply touched me: As Genghis Khan merely looked at the surface without understanding the reason behind it, he made a hasty judgment out of emotion and his own will and killed the eagle which saved his life. It seems that it’s the common nature of us corrupt humans to be impulsive and act according to our own will. Before we attain the truth, no matter how great we are, it’s hard for us to make a rational judgment when encountering something against our will.

In our real life, many things befall us every day. Each of them, however, usually can’t be controlled by ourselves, much less be in line with our will. Thus, we often inevitably expose our naturalness and lose our temper, and also impetuously rely on our self-will to do something that we may bitterly regret. At bottom, it is because we don’t maintain a heart of seeking and obeying God that we can’t help exposing our natural selves. I recalled that recently there were people who came to preach Almighty God’s work of the last days to me time and again. However, since I held on to those viewpoints such as “The Lord Jesus who does not ride upon a white cloud is false,” “Any belief beyond the Bible is a heresy,” “It’s impossible for God to do His work in China,” “It’s impossible that God does the work of judgment,” and “The pastors and elders must know it first when the Lord comes back,” and so on, I refused to investigate Almighty God’s work and drove away the brothers and sisters who came to preach the gospel time after time. Meanwhile, some believers within religion even listened to the pastors and elders and called the police to arrest them.

To be honest, when they preached the gospel to me, I found most of what they communicated was that which I had never thought about before. Through their fellowship, I gained some knowledge of the reason behind the desolation in the religious world, and began to know that my belief was making a deal with the Lord. However, due to the hindrances of my notions, I had no desire to listen to more of their fellowship, nor did I seek. But later, when I settled down, the Lord’s word occurred to me, “Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit” (Matthew 7:17-18). Although We’ve all been believers in the Lord for years and consider ourselves as devout Christians, we still did evil to the Eastern Lightning followers, like beating them, abusing them, and even calling the police to arrest them. However, they not only didn’t bear a grudge against us, but continued to preach the gospel to us as they always did. Why is our living out so much poorer than theirs? And why can’t we, who praise ourselves as devout Christians, have the basic sense to make a decision after carefully seeking and investigating in welcoming the Lord’s return in the last days? … I am besieged with these questions. If I shut the returned Lord Jesus outside the door due to my notions and imaginations, will I make a more serious mistake than that Genghis Khan made? His misjudgment only cost him a beloved eagle, while I might lose the opportunity of being raptured into the kingdom of heaven by the Lord Jesus if I refuse to investigate Almighty God’s work of the last days. It seems not to be a small issue, and I should no longer jump to conclusions and blindly condemn Almighty God’s work of the last days. The Lord Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). I can’t stubbornly hold on to my own notions anymore. Instead, I should be the wise virgin who seeks with a pure heart, and actively investigate Almighty God’s work and word in the last days. I believe that the Lord Jesus will guide me to recognize His voice and keep up with His footsteps!
