Film Review: The Gospel Messenger – God Guides Her to Fulfill the Mission of Love

By Haoxuan, Finland

Today, I’ll introduce you a film The Gospel Messenger. Seeing the film title, I’m reminded of wave upon wave of western missionaries coming to China, such as James Hudson Taylor, Robert Morrison, and so on. It is they who risked their life to send the gospel to China. Without complaints and regrets, they only sought to fulfill the mission of love. This is God’s wondrous deed. Also, it shows to people that the faith given by the Creator to Christians is the source of their spirit of dedication.

The protagonist Chen Yixin in the film is also someone who imitates them. Even though it is full of difficulties and dangers to preach the gospel, being moved by God’s love, she still moves fearlessly forward despite hardships, shouldering the mission of love—spreading the gospel and bearing God’s witness.

Chen Yixin has believed in the Lord for more than twenty years. She is zealous to work and preach for the Lord. Afterward, she fortunately hears the gospel of the last days of Almighty God and ultimately reunites with the Lord. With great joy, she tells the good news of the Lord’s return to brothers and sisters in the Lord. Unexpectedly, she undergoes many attacks and obstacles of the pastors and elders in the church as well as the persecution and arrest by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), suffering much hardship. Once weak as she is in such bitter experiences, she still can rely on the faith and strength God gives her to shoulder the commission of God and to strive courageously and fearlessly forward. This is all God’s guidance.

meeting, brothers and sisters

Due to the CCP’s arrest, Chen Yixin and her Co-worker Su Jie escape to another city to continue preaching the gospel. They, however, are incessantly rejected and driven away. … A group of shots emphasize the plot of the film from different angles and display difficulties and dangers the protagonist experiences in preaching the gospel. When Chen Yixin is frustrated in spreading the gospel, she feels perplexed. Several close-ups are created by the director to lay stress on the subjects of this film.

Chen Yixin holds the book The Word Appears in the Flesh in her hands and reads: “Have you ever thought how grieved and anxious God’s heart is? How can He bear to see the innocent mankind He created with His own hands suffering such torment? … Out of your love for God, are you not willing to strive to save those who have survived? Are you not willing to use all your effort to repay the God who loves mankind like His own flesh and blood?” At this moment, I can’t help remembering the story of Jonah in the Bible. God said to Jonah: “And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?” (Jonah 4:11). From these words, I feel God’s love and mercy for us mankind. God always saves man to the greatest possible extent and will by no means abandon us mankind before the last possible moment. This is God’s sincere feelings for humanity. It is His sincere love that moves and inspires one generation of the gospel messengers after the next. Just as James Hudson Taylor’s classic words say: “Can we do too much for Him? Can we do enough for such a precious Saviour?” This may be the heart voice of the gospel messengers of each generation.

meeting, talking, brothers and sisters

After Chen Yixin understands God’s will, she braces up and continues patiently delivering the gospel to those who once refused her, because she knows that to bring them before God is God’s commission and also her mission. No matter how painful and difficult it may be, she will continue to walk. Eventually, the local gospel work achieves a breakthrough by the work of the Holy Spirit in co-ordination with Chen Yixin and her co-worker. But when they are happy and grateful to God for many people’s accepting the gospel, the scene occurs where the pastors and elders unit with the CCP police to arrest them. This word of God “But when they persecute you in this city, flee you into another” pushes forward the plot, and also runs through the whole film as important lines.

In several years Chen Yixin spreads the gospel in many provinces and cities. Though she suffers various persecutions, she has never given up God’s commission, her mission—spreading the gospel.

At the end of the film, because the CCP’s persecution and arrest become ever fiercer, Chen Yixin is compelled to escape abroad. No matter where she is, she’ll never forget to spread the gospel and testify God. This is the spirit of devotion of the gospel messengers taking God’s commission as their duty. As the protagonist says: “Back in the days when the Lord Jesus did His work, Christians were frenziedly persecuted and slaughtered by Judaism and the Roman government. Then they fled to countries around the world and delivered the Lord Jesus’ gospel to all nations and all places. It was through this means that God expanded the gospel work. Today, Almighty God’s work in the last days has been dementedly oppressed and arrested by Chinese government, but in the same way, God is certainly expanding and spreading His kingdom gospel.”

in the airport, goes forward with her luggage

The film is rounded off with the scene where Chen Yixin goes forward with her luggage. The steady and courageous expression on her face shows her strong and fearless character and her firm faith in God. Her experience allows us to feel Christians’ hardships and frustrations in spreading the gospel. Their unbeatable faith witnesses God’s deeds in man, demonstrating that God has conquered a group of people who are of the same mind with Him and gained glory. Just as one word says: What is from God will thrive and what is from man will perish. This is true.

It is said that The Church of Almighty God has extended to many countries in the world. Besides, some movies and videos produced by The Church of Almighty God have drawn western scholars’ high attention, and received high recognition and praise from professors and scholars in the Conference of the Baltic Alliance for Asian Studies, such as Massimo Introvigne, the professor of sociology of religion at Pontifical Salesian University in Torino, Italy, PierLuigiZoccatelli, the deputy director for CESNUR (Center for Studies on New Religions) and professor of sociology of religion at the Salesian Pontifical University and so on. It really can be seen that The Church of Almighty God is upheld by the Holy Spirit and has the work of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, how can it be possible that the gospel has been spread to countries all around the world under the CCP’s demented suppression! This reminds me of the word: Since ancient times the true way has been subject to persecution.
