Dreams Have Come True – A Film Review of The Moment of Change
By Xiao Ai
“Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed” (1Co 15:51-52). Yes, you didn’t misread it! The plot of the film entitled The Moment of Change is developed from this passage of scripture. It’s a gospel video based on the Christianity. Nowadays, only with the help of various novels can numerous new videos be produced. In this background, the subject matters of gospel videos are true, fresh and characteristic. Moreover, the truth that they convey also can comfort our empty hearts and it’s greatly beneficial to the spiritual life of the Christians.
About the Confusion
Beginning with the desolation of the world of religion, the film mentions that lots of iniquities happen in the church and many people’s love and faith have cooled. The appearance of these scenes all show that the day of the Lord’s coming has drawn near. From this, it shows numerous Christians’ confusion about facing the Lord’s return. The positive characters, which are represented by Chen Liang, Yang Xinjing and Lin Muzhen, put forward a view, “Although we are forgiven of our sins after believing in the Lord, we can still often tell lies and commit sins, living in the circle of sinning and confessing, unable to free ourselves. So we haven’t become holy. Thus, when the Lord comes, can we be raptured to the kingdom of heaven or not?” Concerning this argument, they hold a debate between positive and negative opinions.
Regarding the question whether man can, the protagonist Su Mingyue ponders the Lord Jesus’ word: “Because it is written, Be you holy; for I am holy” (1Pe 1:16). She thinks: Measured by the Lord’s word, many people only hold on to the Lord Jesus’s name but not His way and not His teachings. They always live in the condition of sinning and confessing. So such people won’t be able to enter into the kingdom of heaven. However, not understanding that believers in God should listen to man’s word or God’s word, she speaks of Paul’s word, “justified by faith,” and sets it as basis for entering the kingdom of heaven. Besides, she talks about the verse of 1 Corinthians 15:52: “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” This viewpoint also lays the groundwork for the following debate.
The Crucial Point
The crucial point in this film, which deserves to be mentioned, is the appearance of Su Mingyue’s son and daughter in law. In a few short minutes, by using the visual modes of expression, the directors tell audience that the opinion the protagonist has held to, “People can be raptured to the kingdom of heaven no matter whether their outward behaviors are good or not,” collapses by itself. On the one hand, Zheng Hao’s words give Su Mingyue cause for reflection; on the other hand, his drunken words indirectly represent one type of people’s opinion of the Lord’s coming. The cleverness of this mode of expression is to make audience visually know the untenability of a certain viewpoint. Furthermore, it can avoid the dullness brought by dictation and it can make audience feel the same way.
Seeking and Knocking on the Door
When a load of confusion arises one after another, the protagonist heartily prays to the Lord for guidance, which reflects the importance of having the heart to seek God in all things for a true believer in the Lord. The Lord, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” (Mat 7:7). From this we can see that the directors also spent efforts on some details. As the plot gradually deepens, the video moves into a climax. Through an opening, the protagonist and two co-workers going to sustain a sister who is tired of service, the film, in another respect, reflects the desolation of the churches. Then they realize that they should not restrict themselves in the church but should actively find a church that has the work of the Holy Spirit. This mode of expression naturally makes a foreshadowing for the following plot, that is, the protagonist finds the church that has the Holy Spirit’s work. At this point in the film, the biggest part of the film just begins.
Clearing the Clouds Away
In the gathering, with regard to the question of greeting the Lord’s appearance and return, some co-workers hold to Paul’s words. In addition, they say that these words are divinely inspired by God and that they are God’s words. Then, starting from fellowshipping about how to distinguish between God’s word and man’s word, Brother Cheng gives some examples and draws analogies. All he said is well-founded, and makes us know that man’s words are man’s words and God’s words are God’s words, and also tells us that for the matter of entering the kingdom of heaven, it should be based on the words of the Lord Jesus as final. After that, Brother Zhang, centering around the biblical prophecies, gives a profound fellowship about the true mysteries in them, which enlightens people on the spot and they instantly understand the gems. These fellowships make us have discernment between God’s word and man’s word. Meantime, we have a brand-new knowledge of the verse, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God.”
Then Brother Cheng brings the subject with biblical prophecies, and gives a more detailed fellowship on this, joins the debate and makes his argument. At the end of the film, Brother Zhang fellowships the true meaning of the moment of change with a few short words, which makes us sense even more that the mystery of God’s word is endless.
And here the film is coming to an end. As a Christian, I think that this film can better satisfy that I require inside than many spiritual books. By lively performance, the directors and actors precisely express our expectation of the Lord’s return, which makes me feel as if in the film. What benefits me most after seeing the film, I think, is that I have a pure acceptance and understanding of the verses about the moment of change; meantime, I know I should have a heart to seek when facing the Lord’s coming. In a word, “The Moment of Change” can truly make our dreams come true.
